The Infinite battle of Olympus – The legend lives on.

Moving forward is part of life. It is a norm we have to adapt in the coming years after the war against the Covid-19 Virus. Yes, It is hard breaking news for the Olympus camera user after hearing the news this week. Losing a part of the business of a big company is common nowadays. Some are obvious. But, some of the reasons they’re losing money in business are difficult to see. Some blame the configuration and specification of the product, some just ignore the factual reality of how unique the products are. 

Olympus is fighting a different war now. After 84 years in the business, the company adopted an infinite mindset to cope with the extremely severe digital camera market. I considered this is a strategic move by Olympus. It is a game-changer for the company. Olympus never fight to win the war, they fight to continue the war and to survive. Their objective is not to win—the objective is to keep playing, keep perpetuating the game. We cannot have a true winner in the camera business. All brands of cameras are made equally good and have their unique capability. It raises a question that we don’t fully understand winning and losing, that there are other definitions of winning that exist in our society.

In the game theory that I mentioned above, Olympus running a business is a journey without a final destination. The brand is carried on by another company to keep the game keep playing. Infinite-minded CEOs of the company make sure the brand survive and become more productive in the future. In contrast, finite games have defined rules and a defined end that has clear winners and losers. They win if they can maintain their financial independence. They lose if they run out of money and cannot maintain their independence. That’s why a cold world between America and China will never end if one of them fighting just to win. The infinite player will win as it fights to survive.

I am not surprised Olympus make such a move. They are smart people, after all, Olympus was originated from the land that saw itself as a ‘warrior nation’. A country typically focuses on the samurai heritage, especially the concept of bushido – “The way of the warrior” until today. Lets the horns and drums, the instrument of war echo in the field of battle of the business world. “A good death is always its own reward."
